A special CD connecting two special singers

A special CD connecting two special singers

See the CD in 小鳳姐’s hand in the first two pictures? It is the same CD in the third picture. Night Rains by Janis Ian, which contains the song “Here comes the night” that 小鳳姐 has recorded as “人似浪花” and often sings in her concerts as it is one of her favourite songs.

See the white-haired lady in the third picture? That is Janis Ian in April 2006. And yes, that’s also Janis Ian on the cover of Night Rains almost 30 years ago. The CD is also signed “TO PAULA - THANK YOU!” by Janis.

How did it happen that the same CD is in the 3 pictures? Allow me to share the exciting adventure that Angie and I went on to bring the Night Rains CD from Janis Ian to 小鳳姐. It’s a long story, but I hope you’ll bear with us and read on.

Back in October 2005, I was listening to Janis on my drive home and found one of the songs very familiar. I thought it sounded like a song I’d heard 小鳳姐 sing before. When I got home, I took out the one and only 徐小鳳 CD that I own, played it and true enough, there was the song with the same melody. I took out the CD insert to look at the songwriter’s credit and there it was - J Ian. There was also another J Ian song on the CD which I didn’t recognise at all.

I was so excited by my “discovery” that I wrote about it on my web log in an entry called “Janis Ian in Cantonese!” About two weeks later, a lady by the name of Angie left a comment on that web log entry to say that she likes both of 徐小鳳’s cover versions of the two Janis Ian songs. She’d included her email address so I wrote to her but did not receive a reply.

A few months later, Angie got in touch again. She’d read on my web log that I would be going to the UK to see Janis. She asked if I could bring along the Night Rains CD for Janis to sign for 小鳳姐. I said I could. Due to the time constraint (it was less than 2 weeks before I was due to leave for the UK), we arranged for a copy to be sent from the Janis Ian online store directly to my friend in the UK. Together with the CD, I also ordered a copy of the Janis Ian Live at Club Cafe! DVD for 小鳳姐.Meanwhile, Angie sent me two copies of 小鳳姐’s 1987 concert DVD, one to give to Janis, the other for me (thanks, Angie!). I had also decided earlier to give Janis my copy of the 徐小鳳 CD that has the Cantonese version of “Here comes the night” “人似泿花”on it.

On 16 April 2006, I saw Janis in a Living Room Concert that my friend had booked to celebrate her birthday. A Living Room Concert is a charity concert that Janis will perform for anyone in their living room, with the money going to The Pearl Foundation, a charity she’d set up in memory of her mother who had suffered from multiple sclerosis to fund scholarships for adults (mostly women) returning to school. The maximum number in the audience is limited to 40.

One of the first things Janis did when she arrived at the venue was to pass to me a very special package. Because it would be very expensive to send the package by courier, her assistant had suggested that Janis bring the package with her. Sure! Little did Janis know that two items inside the package were for her!

After the concert, Janis met, took pictures and signed items for the 40 lucky people who’d heard her sing earlier. I held back and waited till everybody had had their turn, then I sat down with her and told her about 小鳳姐’s Cantonese version of “Here comes the night”. I gave her 小鳳姐’s CD and DVD, and then asked her to sign the Night Rains CD and Live at Club Cafe DVD. And then I asked for a picture to be taken of the two of us holding those 4 items.

Yes, that’s me in the picture with the white-haired Janis Ian

A week later, I returned to Malaysia. Now that I had the signed items from Janis to 小鳳姐, how was I going to give them to Angie? The simplest way would be by courier. But somehow, I wanted to personally give the items to Angie. So I told Angie, and she said there were rumours that 小鳳姐 would be staging some concerts in Hong Kong towards the end of the year. She said it would be nice if I could personally hand the items to 小鳳姐 myself, so we decided I would hold onto the items and wait for more definite news about the concerts. While waiting, I ordered a copy of the latest Janis Ian CD, Folk is the New Black, for 小鳳姐, and asked that Janis signed the CD, too. There was already a signed copy for Angie, that had been signed after the living room concert back in April.

I think it was in late October when we heard definite news that 小鳳姐 would be staging a series of concerts during Christmas in Hong Kong. Without hesitation, I agreed to fly to Hong Kong for one of the concerts so that Angie and I could meet and we could give the signed CDs and DVD to 小鳳姐. After checking the concert dates, I decided on 16 December as it was a weekend and easier for me to fly in. I was running out of annual leave days by then so a weekend would work best for me!

I took half a day off on 15 December and took an early evening flight to Hong Kong, touching down around 9:30 p.m. and finally arriving at the hotel, the Harbour Plaza Metropolis, after 11:00 p.m. Angie had said I could meet them backstage at the Hong Kong Coliseum just across the road from the hotel, but I didn’t.

The next morning, I met a friend and spent half a day with her, visiting the giant pandas at Ocean Park, among other things. I finally contacted Angie in the mid afternoon, she was having lunch with some friends, and we made arrangements to meet back at the hotel. A few hours later, I was knocking on the door of her hotel room. I could hear voices inside, and then the door opened and there she was - Angie, my online friend and partner in this elaborate but exciting adventure to bring together our two favourite singers.

In the room, I handed over the two CDs (Night Rains and Folk is the New Black) and the Live at Club Cafe DVD as well as a 5x7 copy of picture #3 and a letter I’d written to 小鳳姐 to explain about the various items. I also gave Angie her signed copy of Folk is the New Black. I was also introduced to Maggie.

A while later, Angie and Maggie took me across the road to the back entrance of the Hong Kong Coliseum. There I met other fans of 小鳳姐, including Joyce, Ben, Siew Mun and Jackie (my apologies if I missed out anyone’s names). Angie and I made arrangements on who would take pictures, etc.

We waited. And waited. Each time a car drove in, we thought it was 小鳳姐. But for some reason, that evening of all evenings, she did not arrive early. By 7:00 p.m., we decided not to wait anymore but to go for dinner.

After a quick dinner, we were back at the Hong Kong Coliseum. When we’d left the backstage area about an hour ago, the place was quite empty, but after dinner, it was packed with people, all coming to see the one and only 小鳳姐. And then, Angie gave me the loveliest piece of news - we would be sitting in the front row!

By 8:15 p.m., we were inside and seated at our places. Sharp at 8:30 p.m., the lights dimmed, the music started, and there she was, rising on the special platform in the middle of the stage. For the next 3 hours, she held the audience’s total attention with her singing, stage presence and witty interaction with them. Although that night she did not sing “人似泿花”, she did sing the other Janis Ian song she’d covered, as well as my all-time favourite 徐小鳳 song, “隨想曲”. Before the concert that evening, I’d been a fan of her songs, but after that evening, I was completely mesmerised and won over, and I am now pleased to call myself a 徐小鳳 fan!

//farm1.static.flickr.com/136/376271912_0193139e37.jpg?v=0” cannot be displayed, because it contains errors.

After the concert ended at 11:30 p.m., we made our way backstage to wait for her. While waiting, I asked Angie how much I had to pay her for the ticket and she said it was her Christmas present to me. THANKS, ANGIE! Your Christmas present was not in vain as it has helped to make a 徐小鳳 fan of me!

After about an hour, 小鳳姐 emerged from the backstage door and walked towards the double barrier where her fans were waiting and began chatting with the group to our left. Ben called out to tell her that we had something special for her and she walked over to where we were. The two CDs, DVD, picture and letter were given to the security guard to hand to 小鳳姐. Both Angie and Ben helped to tell her what the items were. I did not speak much as they were speaking in Cantonese and I didn't trust myself to be able to tell her clearly what the items were and where they came from. I was mostly quiet during the time she spent with us and Angie had to point to me when telling 小鳳姐 I'd come from Malaysia to give her the various items. For that brief moment, she looked at me and gave me a smile.

She was very pleased to receive the items, and said she would make sure to go through them carefully. But it didn't seem like she knew who Janis is. It seems to me 小鳳姐 is a fan of the two songs but did not really know the woman who wrote the songs. When she handed the items to her music director 黃良昇, I heard her tell him “that's the original singer of “人似泿花”.   There was a look of pleasant recognition on his face, so all was not lost that night.

After she’d handed the items to her music director, I remembered about the picture and asked Angie to ask 小鳳姐 if we could get a picture of her holding the various items. She graciously agreed and turned to ask her music director 黃良昇for the items. The result, as you can see, is picture #1 which has clearly captured both 小鳳姐 and her music director.

Sometimes, I cannot believe that it really happened that I got Janis Ian to sign some items for 小鳳姐, and that I really went to Hong Kong to hand the items to her. At those times, I look at these two pictures, as well as all the pictures from my UK trip and the concert on 16 December, and I know it really happened!

小鳳姐 has been in the entertainment industry for more than 30 years. Like Janis, her voice has gotten better over the years. And like Janis, 小鳳姐 “live” sounds like 小鳳姐 on record - no gimmicks, just her. In fact, during the show on 16 December, she sang a capella with her back-up singers to show off their vocal harmony, but really, she was the one who impressed the most with her clear voice.

I feel very blessed to have seen these two singers “live”, and with Angie’s help, to have “brought” them together. Now the next adventure is to arrange for a meeting between 小鳳姐 and Janis Ian! Can we do it, Angie??

[Janis Ian]

the composer of “Here Comes The Night”, the original English version of 小鳳姐’s “人似浪花”, is an American singer-songwriter who is perhaps best known for the controversial “Society’s Child” which she released when she was only 14 years old, and also for “At Seventeen”, which won her the 1975 Grammy for Best Female Pop Vocal Performance. She has been in the business for more than 40 years, and has always recorded her own songs, either written by herself or with other songwriters. Although she is mainly identified as a folk singer, her range goes beyond folk and includes jazz and country & western. She has also written hit songs for other singers like Roberta Flack (“Jesse”), Bette Midler (“Some People’s Lives”) and Mel Torme (“Silly Habits”), as well as recorded duets with Willie Nelson (“Memphis”) and Dolly Parton (“My Tennessee Hills”). Her song “Stars” inspired a collection of short stories written by well-known science fiction writers based on her songs, and was published in 2003.

Sidenote:
I had also posted on the Janis Ian Message Board about discovering that there is a Cantonese version of her “Here comes the night”. As a result of that post, Janis revived the song for her 2006 Folk is the New Black tour, but rearranged it for acoustic guitar as she no longer plays piano due to a hand injury (she had played the original 1978 version on piano). I was fortunate to hear her play it at her Brighton show the evening after the living room concert, and have an amateur video of the performance, too.

(A Special CD connecting two special singers) 的首兩張照片上, 大家可以看見小鳳姐手上拿著的一張CD, 那是Janis Ian 的” Night Rains”大碟, 碟中那首 “Here Comes The Night”, 也就是小鳳姐最心愛的歌曲 -   ”人似浪花”的原裝版本.

在這CD上, Janis Ian 寫了 “To Paula – Thank You”.

http://farm1.static.flickr.com/162/376271916_47734b7343.jpg?v=0

當時環球再次推出小鳳姐87演唱會DVD, 我靈機一觸, 希望Chet可以代我把這張DVD送給Janis, 相信她會有與趣看看小鳳姐如何在演唱會上演繹中文版的”Here Comes The Night” 和 “I Love You Best”.

與此同時, Chet也在Janis’s 的Online shop, 購買了”Night Rains”, “Live at Club Café “ DVD  和 “Folk Is the New Black” CD, 打算送給小鳳姐, 還且是由Janis親自帶往倫敦的. To Paula – Thank You- Janis Ian” ,

好像問了她幾次, “are you sure you want to come?”.

[Janis Ian

好像Roberta Flack的”Jesse”, Bette Midler的 “Some People’s Lives”, 和Mel Torme 的“Silly Habits”. 例如和Willie Nelson合唱”Memphis”, 及Dolly Parton 合唱”My Tennessee Hills”.

JANIS IAN

Thank you for sharing!! Very impressive!

I am glad to be there to witness this live presentation as well.  It's great to read the whole adventure.

Thank you all again to make this happen!

㊣ ,

HaHa!! You probably didn’t know that you had also played a part in this wonderful adventure. I remembered I got to know you and Hill after Terrence Choi’s Fund Raising Concerts. Not long after that, we started talking about our favourite songs and it happened that 深秋立樓頭 is also one of your favourite.
By that time, I had forgotten about Chet’s web page and the message I left there. Since we started trying to find out the original song of 深秋立樓頭, it helped to reminded me of Chet’s interests in 小鳳姐’s [人似浪花]. That is how I went back to check on Chet’s web page and the rest is history.

Angie,

Wow, it's good to know that Hill and I were also part of this adverture indirectly that prompted you to refresh the communications with Chet!! emoticon

It is really unusual for all this to happen. Though we may communicate in usual ways that the web connected us all between Australia, China, HK, Malaysia, the UK; I see that it is not easy to know someone who happened to host a Janis Ian Living Room Concert.

It is the  of 小鳳姐 and Ms. Janis Ian after almost 30 years. emoticonemoticon

We also have 緣 to be their "couriers" at different time and places to help deliver the package, and share the process with all here. emoticon

Chet, isn't your friend (or friend of friend) hosted the concert for 40-people? You are so lucky that you get invited, to make this all happen!

不過有點我不太明白,ANGIE文章 [Chet也在Janis’s 的Online shop, 購買了”Night Rains”, “Live at Club Caf? “ DVD 和 “Folk Is the New Black” CD, 打算送給小鳳姐, 還且是由Janis親自帶往倫敦的.

Paula - are you asking how is it that Janis brought the items to London when I was supposed to have ordered it from her online shop?

When I ordered the items, I indicated that I needed them in England by a certain date. Her assistant wrote and told me how much it would cost to make sure the items reached me at such short notice. It was very expensive and her assistant suggested that, since Janis would be travelling to England, she could be the courier service!

I hope you can understand the above.

As for the dream meeting between 小鳳姐 and Janis - in my letter to 小鳳姐, I had made this suggestion, so maybe she will pass it on to her management people and we can see it happening in the future if Janis ever comes to Hong Kong.

Dear Chet & Angie

What an interesting journey both of you had! When I met Chet at the HK Coliseum, little did I know that so much painstaking effort, feelings of tormenting uncertainties and sacrifices had went into this convoluted arrangement with the eventual result that I had the honour of witnessing - the ultimate joy and climax of bringing the treasured presents onto Paula Tsui's hand. For the least that I can do, I would like to express my deepest admiration and appreciation to both Chet and Angie, that you have possibly fulfilled a dream for our dearest Paula Tsui and for all the fans who loved her. And I cherish my good fortune to be a part of this wondering family that is build on unconditional love.
